The Best of British Variety Tour 2008, presented by Tony Denton Promotions, brings together the cream of variety entertainment from past decades and heads to Plymouth Pavilions on Thursday 11 September 2008.
This unique tour has a line up that features one of the greatest comedy double acts of all time Cannon & Ball, magician Paul Daniels, comic and the host of this tour Frank Carson, Jimmy Cricket, 70s chart sensations Brotherhood Of Man and The Krankies.
CANNON & BALL - Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball are one of Britain’s funniest and most successful double acts ever. In a career spanning 43 years they have achieved a string of honours that places them among the all-time greats of show business. On television they have starred in their own series practically every year since 1979. They have also guest starred on all the major shows including ‘Wogan’, ‘Parkinson’, ‘Des O’Connor’, ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’ and several Royal Variety Shows. To add to their pedigree, they remain the only act to have won three separate National Club Awards and be named as the Variety Club ‘Personalities of the Year’. Their feature film ‘The Boys in Blue’ in addition to its cinema success, went on to become a video best seller. The boys have also been the subject of ‘This is Your Life’. More recently they have been in ‘Last Of The Summer Wine’ and experienced life in the jungle on the ITV hit show “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here” for ITV1.
PAUL DANIELS - In the world of television magic, no one has enjoyed more success both on ITV and the BBC ever. His creative genius enabled him to produce consistently stunning shows, never rivalled in spectacle, covering the full range of the world of entertainment magic, from small, ‘close-up’ effects, to enormous outside broadcast illusions. With too many awards to mention and a reputation as one of the most popular society and show-business entertainers, Paul has entertained Royals and Prime Ministers around the world, has starred in his own hugely successful West End Theatre Show for a record 14 months and headlined in Las Vegas and Broadway. His TV career has not been limited to performing magic, as a presenter, he has hosted many popular game shows including ‘Odd One Out’, ‘Every Second Counts’ and ‘Wipe Out’. He has also designed special effects for stage and screen including Cats, Phantom of the Opera and the film of Return to Oz and many more. More recently, Paul was commissioned by the English National ballet to create magical effects for their new version of The Nutcracker.
FRANK CARSON - Born in Belfast, he came to England to work as a stand-up comedian and had success on the long running music-hall revival TV show ‘The Good Old Days’. He also won the peak-viewing national favourite talent show ‘Opportunity Knock’s several times. His career was cemented when he performed on the TV show ‘The Comedians’ (1971) which consisted of a half hour of non-stop stand-up comedy from several comedians per show. ‘The Comedians’ led to similar shows ‘Who Do You Do?’ and ‘The Wheel-tappers And Shunters Club’. The last was an attempt to bring the northern English working man's club show to TV. Alongside TV he also worked as a stage entertainer, appearing before the Royals in shows. Carson's two catchphrases ‘It’s the Way I Tell ‘Em’ and ‘What A Cracker’ never seem to fail when he appears before an audience, and he often tells 'Irish jokes'. ie. jokes mocking an Irishman in a mild way. He had heart surgery in 1976 and it was suggested that this would mean he would retire but he continued making live appearances and doing a charity work, for which he was awarded a papal knighthood by the Pope.
JIMMY CRICKET - Came to prominence in 1981 after reaching the finals of ITV’s ‘Search For A Star’ competition. He perfected his own take on the ‘thick Irishman’ stereotype, including his catchphrases ‘c'mere’ and ‘...and there's more’ and his distinctive outfit: cut-off trousers, tuxedo, hat and wellies marked ‘L’ and ‘R’ – always on the wrong feet! In 1986, he landed his own TV series on Central Television called And There's More, which ran for three years. He also had his own radio series for Radio 2, Jimmy’s Cricket Team, from 1991 to 1995. He is a stalwart on the Pantomime circuit, performing in over 17 so far. Recently Jimmy has just finished writing a Musical about the woes of a struggling lower division football team called ‘Give Me One Good Season’ which he hopes to launch over the next few months.
BROTHERHOOD OF MAN – Best known for winning the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest with the much loved song ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ which went on to be one of the biggest selling records of all time, selling in excess of five million copies. It was No1 in 33 different countries including the U.K. where it held the top spot for six weeks. They are proud to boast today the exact same line up of four faces known to millions of TV viewers and pop fans all over the world of Nicky Stevens, Sandra Stevens, Martin Lee and Lee Sheriden. The group had two more British number one's in the shape of "Angelo" and "Figaro". They also had a string of other hits including "My Sweet Rosalie", "Oh Boy (the mood I'm in)", “Middle of the Night” and “Beautiful Lover". There were also five hit albums, altogether earning each member of the group a total of 26 Platinum, Gold and Silver Discs. The three number one's, as well as most of the other hits, were written by group members Lee Sheriden and Martin Lee along with Tony Hiller. As writers they have each won three Ivor Novello Awards. The Group were honoured to appear at the royal command performance 1977 for the Queens Silver Jubilee and have also topped the bill in almost every Theatre/ Concert Hall in the U.K. including The London Palladium and the Royal Albert Hall.
THE KRANKIES -Scottish married couple Ian and Janette have been in show business for over 40 years - headlining in every major theatre in the UK and Australia.
