John Davies Art Gallery - Morton-in-Marsh

Well that’s exactly what inveterate art dealer John Davies has done and it is set to create quite a stir. The John Davies Gallery opens in its new location on the outskirts of Moreton-in-Marsh on December 1st, providing a perfect pre-Christmas sensation.

Many will have known the gallery in its previous location in Stow-on-the-Wold. And many will have wondered what on earth has happened to John Davies over the past year. The Stow gallery has been shut for much of that time and rumours abound about what has been going on.

The wait is over and the opening show, which runs throughout December and January, will feature some of the most significant artists working in Britain today. These include Anthony Green RA, John Kinglsey DA PAI, Matthew Lanyon, Sandy Murphy RSW RGI, David Prentice, Chris Prewett, James Robertson RSA RSW RGI PAI, Fred Schley, Glen Scouller RSW RGI and Duncan Shanks RSA RSW RGI, among others. Alongside this, the gallery will also showcase selected post-Impressionist and classic modern British works.

But that’s not all. Part of the excitement about this project is the building it is housed in and where it is located.

“As soon as I saw it, I could see the potential and this vision has gained in strength as the building work has progressed”, remarks JD.

The high ceilings and open-plan format lend themselves ideally to the function of an art gallery. Paintings of all sizes can be hung and there is plenty of space to view them in – about 2000 sq ft initially, with a further 1000 sq ft extension opening early in 2008.

The hanging system used has been designed in-house because off-the-shelf solutions weren’t up to the job.

“This caused a delay in the opening date but we simply had to get it right”, says JD.

From the outside the building looks stunning, with its huge chimney stack reminding visitors of its industrial roots. It is situated opposite Cox’s Architectural Salvage Yard and next to Gary Wright Antiques. The complex has extensive on-site parking and direct access to Moreton-in-Marsh train station, which is on the main London Paddington line. It is on the opposite side of the tracks to the newly refurbished Budgens store.

John Davies Art Gallery

The John Davies Gallery has been trading in Stow-on-the-Wold since 1977. It has gained a reputation for showcasing a dynamic range of period and contemporary artwork and for holding nationally acclaimed exhibitions.

“Nothing has changed in our core values”, remarks JD, “We concentrate on selling fine quality artworks with beauty, meaning and integrity. We recognise that collecting art is about more than simply buying pictures. We form ongoing relationships with people and help them to progress as art collectors.”
