French & Saunders will always be referred to as a British TV ‘comedy great’, for what ‘Are You Being Served’ achieved in the 70’s and ‘Only Fools & Horses’ in the 80’s, it could be said French and Saunders conquered the 90’s.
In 2006, Saunders and French announced that the sketch style French & Saunders show was now dead, and that they had moved on to more age-appropriate material.
To see the show off with a ‘bang’ the TV show will move onto the road and head to Plymouth Pavilions on Wednesday 2 April 2008.
The touring show will feature a blend of classic French & Saunders with them re-enacting some of their favourite clips and characters from the archive, it will also be blended with new material and characters which will bring the tour up to date.
In the early 1990s, the show was given one of the highest budgets in BBC history to create detailed spoofs and satires of pop culture, movies, celebrities and art. French and Saunders continue to film holiday specials for the BBC, and both have been successful starring in their own shows. Saunders starred in and wrote the hit sitcom ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, which is based on a sketch written with French for French & Saunders, while French starred in ‘The Vicar of Dibley’.
In a 2005 poll to find ‘The Comedian's Comedian’, they were voted amongst the top 50 comedy acts ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.
French and Saunders were last on our TV screens with a Christmas Celebrity Special, aired on 27 December 2005 on BBC1.
A 6 part anniversary series, ‘A Bucket O' French & Saunders’, will celebrate the duo’s 20th anniversary with the BBC, commencing on 7 September. The opening episode features classics including the Fat Men, The Extras and an unforgettable Britney Spears and Madonna video, as well as a new sketch in which Dawn pays a visit to a new celebrity restaurant, where Jennifer only seems to want to serve the F Word.
Press & Promotions Officer at Plymouth Pavilions, Robert Maltby said: “This is one of your final chances to see classic French & Saunders, sure these talented comedians will go on to new projects and have already proved there is life afterwards with The Vicar of Dibley as a great example. However, we’ll always remember the sketch show that dominated the 90s and made them into a household name, a show which is still watched and loved today. As we all know this will be a bit of a home coming for Dawn French who spent her school days at St Dunstans Abbey, a love of Plymouth and the South West is sure to add something a little special extra to this show”.
